This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic outreach and communication plans to advocate and gain support for critical Enterprise priorities, legislative and regulatory proposals, and utility projects to a wide range of external audiences. Primary audiences include local, county and select state elected officials as needed, in addition to key business leaders, policymakers, and influential members of the community. The position often requires engagement of corporate executive officers on matters of critical importance to the company and entails advising executives on the external implications and cost/benefits of decisions. The position primarily serves PSE&G, but will also serve PSEG Power and all Enterprise lines of business as the corporate representative in the over 300 towns and 11 counties. The position will also serve as a secondary representative in state legislative districts and congressional districts, as requested by State Government Affairs and Federal Affairs respectively.

Responsibilities entail leading internal teams from Enterprise organizations to develop plans and strategies that achieve milestones and goals while minimizing the disruptive impacts in communities.

  • Examples include DP&C transmission projects, Gas System Modernization Program, environmental upgrades to generating stations, and renewable energy installations in communities. The position also requires the ability to educate and advocate with stakeholders on the local level regarding corporate initiatives. The position is required to assist in resolving escalated constituent issues as a means to leverage relationships to gain support for Enterprise initiatives.
  • The position requires a close working relationship with utility leadership and operations (electric and gas), as well as the highest level of emergency management official activated during emergencies and serve as the single point of contact with these offices during extended restoration periods. The position will further serve as the external lead during these situations in the respective geographic territory. The position frequently advises and directs the activities of projects teams as appropriate to successfully gain the external approvals needed to expedite project timelines. The position is a key source of advice to company executives on the political and community impact of corporate decisions, and will work closely with client businesses and Project Public Affairs in the execution of these objectives – especially at the senior manager level.
  • In collaboration with Corporate Citizenship & Culture, the position manages an events budget and requires the discretion to invest these corporate resources in the most effective manner to improve and leverage external relationships and achieve corporate objectives. Active participation on and with strategic business and nonprofit organization boards of directors is required, frequently beyond normal business hours and on weekends.
  • The position requires availability 24/7 for matters involving elected officials, supporting  PSE&G’s   lines of business  for emergency and storm situations as well media inquiries as needed by Corporate Communications.  While the position primarily serves the utility by responding to local operational, construction and quality-of-life issues on a daily basis, responsibilities extend to PSEG Power and all Enterprise lines of business as the lead corporate representative in the municipalities and counties within Monmouth and Burlington counties.

Required Skills, Competencies, Education or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 9 years of relevant experience in communications, public affairs and/or regulatory affairs and demonstrated knowledge of the utility and power industries. Without a bachelor’s degree, must have 13 years relevant experience in  communications, public affairs and/or regulatory and demonstrated knowledge of the utility and power industries.
  • External candidates should possess experience in the fields of community relations, public boards or committees, elected or appointed government or public sector experience, or large scale construction project experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license. (Extensive in-state travel is required)
  • Must foster an inclusive work environment and respect all aspects of diversity. Must also demonstrate and value differences in others' strengths, perspectives, approaches, and personal choices.
  • Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills developed through interaction with executives, public officials and community/local boards.
  • Writing, presentation and public speaking skills.

  • Lobbying skills, or experience in governmental process advocacy
