Reporting to the ANA CEO, the Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs advocates on behalf of nutrition professionals in policy and government affairs initiatives. The person in this position will work to ensure adoption of policies that facilitate the ability of nutrition professionals to practice to the level of their training and the ability of all Americans to reach their potential through personalized nutrition. The Director is responsible for the overall development and implementation of legislative and regulatory strategies that support organizational goals. The Director supervises contracted lobbyists. The position may be remote or based in the ANA’s suburban Chicago, Illinois office, and requires some travel.

 Responsibilities

• Strategy development and execution, supervision, and delegation for state and federal policy and government affairs initiatives
• Train and supervise advocacy team members
• Conduct and/or supervise legislative and regulatory activity, including bill and regulations tracking, analysis, mark-up, and drafting; negotiations, communications with policymakers and stakeholders, including testifying at hearings
• Activate practitioners and allies to engage in grassroots and grasstops advocacy
• Hire and maintain communication with contract lobbyists
• Manage and engage in relationships with coalition groups, allies, and other stakeholders
• Conduct legislative, regulatory, and other research as needed
• Manage use of subscription services such as legislative and regulatory tracking software; grassroots advocacy platforms; and legal research platforms
• Assess policy landscape and identify opportunities for advancement
• Develop strategic plans and work plans in conjunction with Executive Director and organization-wide Directors
• Respond to internal and external advocacy and policy inquiries
• Manage departmental budget, in conjunction with Director of Advocacy Advancement and Director of Operations
• Provide advocacy training and/or updates to members, staff, practitioners, Board members, and others
• Manage online presence for advocacy initiatives
• Draft position statements, white papers, and other written advocacy documents
• Build, maintain, and build on advocacy department infrastructure, including research databases, document archives, and other elements as needed

 Required Qualifications 

• 7- 10+ years’ experience in advocacy, policy, and/or government affairs
• Bachelor’s degree or above in public policy, public health, or related areas. Knowledge or experience in nutrition field a plus.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and work well as a collaborative team member
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Knowledge of health care workforce regulation and scope of practice issues
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to build relationships with policymakers, allies, coworkers, association members and other stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in multi-state health care workforce policy
• Master’s degree in public policy, public health, law or related areas
• Familiarity with or strong interest in nutrition policy
• Experience working in a health care trade association or health advocacy organization

• The ANA office is located in Hinsdale, IL. Remote work for the right candidate is possible
